ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

Dr. Alice Fremuth-Wolf has been Deputy Secretary General of VIAC since January 2012.  Having studied law at Vienna University (Mag. iur. 1995, Dr. iur. 2002), Utrecht University (1994) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LL.M. 1998), she served as assistant professor at the Department of Civil Procedure Law at the Law Faculty of Vienna University.  Before opening her own practice in 2004, she worked with major Austrian law firms and acted as party representative and arbitrator in international commercial arbitration cases.  Alice Fremuth-Wolf has authored articles and books on arbitration and also serves as a lecturer for arbitration at the Law Faculty of Vienna University, where she was coach of the Vienna team for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot from 2004-2009.  She is also a qualified mediator and a co-organiser of the CDRC IBA-VIAC-Elsa Consensual Dispute Resolution Competition in Vienna.

Ndanga Kamau is an international lawyer specialising in international dispute settlement, public international law, and private international law. She sits as an arbitrator in institutional and ad hoc arbitrations, and represents clients in international disputes. In addition to her representation work, Ndanga advises clients on dispute avoidance, risk mitigation, drafting dispute resolution clauses, and developing dispute resolution strategies. Prior to setting up her international law practice in The Hague, she worked in international law firms, an arbitral institution, government, and international organisations – on three continents. She has worked and lived in Cape Town, Geneva, Houston, London, Mauritius, and Nairobi.

Annette Magnusson is Secretary General of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) since 2010. She joined SCC from the law firm Mannheimer Swartling in Stockholm and before that Baker & McKenzie, Sweden. Ms Magnusson is the author or editor of several publications on international arbitration, including Arbitrating for Peace (Kluwer, 2017) and International Arbitration in Sweden (Kluwer, 2013), and the producer of the documentary The Quiet Triumph (2017); a film about interconnection between economic development, arbitration and peace. She is the founder of the Stockholm Treaty Lab, and international crowdsourcing challenge to innovate international law for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and a frequent speaker on sustainability and arbitration, including addressing Climate Change and Arbitration at the 24th ICCA Congress in Sydney 2018. Ms Magnusson is listed as a Thought Leader and Global Leader in Who’s Who Legal.

Professor Maxi Scherer is Special Counsel at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and regularly sits as arbitrator. She also holds the Chair for International Arbitration, Dispute Resolution and Energy Law at Queen Mary, University of London, and is Queen Mary’s Director of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies in Paris and of the LLM in Paris programme. Prof. Scherer further serves on the Delos Board of Advisors and acts as the General Editor of the Kluwer Journal of International Arbitration. She was previously Global Professor of Law at NYU Law School, Visiting Professor at SciencesPo Law School Paris and Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown Centre of Transnational Legal Studies.

Hafez Virjee is the President and a co-Founder of Delos. Hafez also serves as an independent arbitrator at Virjee Arbitration. He previously acted mainly as counsel. His clients have spanned the range of listed companies, private equity firms, tech start-ups, industrial concerns, State entities and treaty organisations, in disputes across a wide range of sectors and relationships, including shareholder agreements, joint-ventures, agency, M&A, telecommunications, tech, energy, pharmaceutical, construction and defence. Hafez is a solicitor of England & Wales and also qualified in France. He was previously at Dechert in Paris (with a secondment to Dubai in 2015) and prior to that at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London. He co-edits the Delos Guide to Arbitration Places (GAP) and regularly writes and speaks on international arbitration and legal risk management. He holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (M.A.), the Université Paris II – Panthéon-Assas (Maîtrise) and the University of California – Berkeley (LL.M.). He is listed among the Future Leaders of Arbitration by Who’s Who Legal.
