Sam Wong is an up-and-coming international arbitration practitioner based in Hong Kong with 10 years of dispute resolution experience, focusing on international arbitration, cross-border complex commercial disputes, regulatory compliance and internal investigation. Sam is currently a Senior Associate at Han Kun Law Offices LLP, a premier Chinese law firm with a global presence. He previously worked as an associate at top US firms including Latham & Watkins and Kirkland & Ellis. He has been named in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific as a key lawyer and part of a 'diligent' and 'very responsive' disputes resolution team.
Sam currently serves on the list of arbitrators of the Saudi Center for Commercial Arbitration (SCCA). Sam has extensive experience acting as legal counsel in over 20 international arbitration cases under major institutional rules, including HKIAC, ICC, SIAC and UNCITRAL Rules, involving various jurisdictions such as the BVI, Cayman Islands, England & Wales, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, PRC China, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States. Such arbitrations cover a wide range of cross-border commercial disputes including share purchase, share redemption, intellectual property rights and licensing arrangements, joint venture agreements, professional negligence claims, technology, e-commerce and virtual assets, post-M&A and shareholder rights, directors' duties and fiduciary duties. The amounts in dispute range from hundreds of millions to over USD 3.5 billion. Sam has represented a diverse clientele including international PE funds, listed companies, global conglomerates, Big 4 accounting firms, state-owned enterprises and high-net-worth individuals together with their investment vehicles and nominee holding companies.
Sam is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since 2021 and is dual-qualified in both Hong Kong and England & Wales. Sam obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours from the University of Hong Kong, ranking second in class, and holds a Master of Law degree from the University of Cambridge with distinction in corporate insolvency law. Sam is also a registered foreign lawyer with the Singapore International Commercial Court, and has been granted rights of audience with the Astana International Financial Centre Court.
Sam is active in the international arbitration community in Asia. He has been appointed as China Co-Chair of the Young ITA (Institute for Transnational Arbitration) Leadership Committee (2025-2027 term), Member of the International Legal Affairs Committee of the Hong Kong Law Society, and Co-opt Committee Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) East Asia Branch Young Members Group (2025-2026 term). He also regularly speaks on topics relating to international arbitration in both Hong Kong and Mainland China with legal practitioners and in-house counsel as the targeted audience.
Sam has also been active in appointments as presiding arbitrator in various arbitration and mediation moot competitions, including the 21st and 22nd Annual Vis East Moot Competition in 2024 and 2025, the 22nd CIETAC Cup International Commercial Arbitration Moot in 2024, the FDI Moot Shenzhen 2025, the FDI Moot 2025 and ICC-HK International Commercial Mediation Competition 2025. Sam is also listed as a Dual-Qualified Tribunal Secretary for the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration and the South China International Arbitration Center (Hong Kong).
