On Thursday 1 June, we organised a joint event by KLC Law Firm and Delos on “Construction Dispute Resolution in the East Mediterranean“. This webinar addressed different aspects and characteristics of construction arbitration in Eastern Mediterranean region. The panel comprised by practitioners, arbitrators and experts that will share their practical experience on contractual issues arising in construction disputes, dispute boards and dispute avoidance, managing a dispute in parallel with project execution and will elaborate on the cultural aspects of an East Med arbitration, the arbitration framework and recent developments.

The speakers included Taner Dedezade (Howard Kennedy), Louk Korovesis (Kroll), Dr. Zeina Obeid (Obeid & Partners), and Dara Sahab (Squire Patton Boggs), with Panagiotis Krystallis (KLC Law Firm) moderating (short bios below).

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Taner Dedezade is an international construction barrister, dispute resolver, published author and world-renowned speaker (FIDIC President’s List of Approved Dispute Adjudicators, ICC Arbitrator, FIDIC Certified Trainer). In his work as an international construction barrister, Taner specialises in the resolution and avoidance of disputes arising out of international construction and engineering projects, particularly under the FIDIC forms. Taner represents both international contractors and employers and is particularly skilled as an advocate before FIDIC dispute boards and ICC arbitral tribunals. As a dispute resolver, Taner passionately believes in dispute prevention and is skilled in facilitating the resolution of disputes. He is currently acting as an ICC arbitrator in relation to an international construction project based in Georgia. Taner has been appointed by CIArb as Arbitrator in relation to three commercial disputes and is on the FIDIC President’s List of Approved Adjudicators. Taner is a world-renowned speaker, a FIDIC-certified trainer, FIDIC trainer of the Year 2020, and has delivered numerous lectures and two-day workshops around the world. He delivers FIDIC lectures annually on the King’s MSc in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution. He was invited by FIDIC to deliver “Top-Up Training” to Members of the FIDIC President’s List and also to FIDIC Accredited Trainers. He formulated and delivers a Comparison course between FIDIC 1999 and 2017 on the FIDIC Academy platform.

Louk Korovesis is a senior director and delay expert. He is a mechanical engineer and project management professional, specializing in forensic construction programming and project management. He has more than 12 years of first-hand experience in project management and the dispute resolution fields of international arbitration and adjudication. Louk is a certified project manager (APMP – PMQ) and his professional memberships include the Technical Chambers of the UK (CEng MIMechE) and Greece and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACIArb). In addition, Louk has a degree in International Construction Contracts from Université Panthéon Assas – Paris II and has specialised in common law, civil law and FIDIC construction contracts. Louk was listed in Who’s Who Legal in the “Future Leaders in Arbitration” category, in 2021 and 2022. His clients said that he is a “superb expert, with attention to detail that presents complex issues with ease”, that he “stands out for his strong technical expertise” and that “his experience from live projects adds great depth to his analysis”.

Panagiotis Krystallis is a Senior Associate in KLC Law Firm. He is a practicing lawyer with more than 14 years field experience in all sorts of business transactions and dispute resolution cases focusing on litigation and major international arbitration cases.

Dr. Zeina Obeid is a Partner at Obeid & Partners, where she practices in the Arbitration department. She acted as counsel in major international arbitration cases across the Middle East and North Africa region. She also acts as arbitrator and as an administrative secretary in several domestic and international arbitrations, both ad hoc and under international institutional arbitral rules, including those of the ICC, DIAC, LCIA, CRCICA, BCDR. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), accredited tutor and committee member of the UAE branch member. She is also member of the ICC Commission on arbitration & ADR and co-vice chair of the IBA Young Lawyer’s Committee.

Dara Sahab is an associate in the International Dispute Resolution Practice Group of Squire Patton Boggs and is based in Dubai.  Dara advises on disputes in litigation and arbitration in commercial and construction matters and in investment arbitration. She has advised clients in relation to US, UAE and KSA court proceedings, and international arbitration proceedings administered under different arbitration rules, including UNCITRAL, DIAC, ICC and LCIA.
